Historic New Harmony

  • Constructed: 1814
  • Location: New Harmony, IN

As a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, Historic New Harmony realizes its mission of preserving New Harmony’s utopian legacy by inspiring innovation and progressive thought through its programs and collections. Guided tours of historic sites are offered each day, departing from our award-winning visitor center, the Atheneum. New Harmony was founded in 1814 as a spiritual sanctuary that later became a haven for international scientists, scholars, and educators who sought equality in communal living. It remains a small rural town and a vibrant center for the concept of community.
