Preservation Personals: A Tranquil, Luxurious Adobe House in Scenic New Mexico

  • By: Rebecca Gale

Sophisticated and serene, I am a lovingly restored 19th-century adobe house in scenic Taos, New Mexico, a beautiful historic town on a desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Built around 1870, I blend in with the area’s traditional adobe houses, including the nearby Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A longtime artists’ colony, Taos offers plenty of cultural experiences, like a visit to the Harwood Museum of Art, located just down the street from me.

In 2009, I was restored to how I might have appeared in the 1920s, but unobtrusive modern conveniences make me a tranquil, comfortable sanctuary for you and your loved ones. My adobe bricks and hard finished plaster walls provide historic charm and a warm, serene atmosphere throughout. Arched doorways, hand-carved beams, and oak wood flooring give character to every room, while thoughtful details like period plumbing fixtures (including a cast-iron claw foot tub), glass doorknobs, and push button light switches give me a sense of old-world sophistication.

With five bedrooms, each featuring an elegant, tiled ensuite bathroom, I offer plenty of space for rest and relaxation. I am nestled in a fenced green space, with trees, turf areas, and garden spaces to create a downtown oasis for your family. In-floor radiant heat will keep you warm on cool desert nights while new windows, doors, fixtures, and appliances ensure you can enjoy my historic charm without having to worry about renovating any time soon.

If you love entertaining, you’ll delight in my butler’s pantry and gourmet kitchen with top-notch appliances. My formal dining room can seat 12 and my lush, landscaped backyard garden and expansive patio space has accommodated over a hundred guests. To top it all off, my wine cellar boasts a built-in cooler and wooden racks made to hold over one thousand bottles.

I offer many more conveniences to meet your needs, including a 1,075-square-foot caretaker’s apartment and expansive two-car garage featuring in-floor radiant heating and a workbench area, storage closet, and shower.
