Preservation Personals: Find Greener Pastures at This 1740 Virginia Farm
Looking for a home where you can really relax and enjoy the scenery? I am a National Register-listed property named Deer Chase, located in Saluda, Virginia, near the Chesapeake Bay. Built around 1740, I’m a splendid example of an 18th-century Tidewater farmhouse.
Should you come visit, you’ll be wowed by my storybook charm and early American ambiance. A long road through the woods leads you to my circular front drive which surrounds an expansive, well-maintained boxwood garden. Set on 16 acres of pasture and woodlands—with the opportunity to buy additional adjoining acreage—I offer rural peace and privacy perfect for anyone who wants to step back in time to a slower pace of life.
My elegant brick exterior is complemented by a tastefully renovated interior featuring 11-foot ceilings, pinewood floors, and five artful fireplaces. Large windows offer views of the Piankatank River, a mere half-mile away. Two of my three upstairs bedrooms have been converted into master suites, with updated bathrooms and closet space. Topping off my modern updates are a convenient first-floor laundry room and a cozy updated kitchen with lovely sage green cabinetry. My front and back porches provide an elegant space to entertain and soak in the scenery that makes my property truly special.
My spacious grounds allow for plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. The nearby Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay offer deep water boat slips and a boat landing for water lovers. A spacious two-story barn and fenced paddock on my property provide the perfect opportunity to raise horses. The barn also features a cooled workshop and plenty of storage space for cars, boats, or antiques. History buffs might be interested to know that my grounds also house a mid-18th-century wooden school building. It needs a little work inside but could make a great guest cottage.
