Preservation Personals: Maryland Colonial Seeks Down-to-Earth Owner

I’m not the most ostentatious of houses, but behind my austere facade is a building that will make for a wonderful family home.

My claim to fame is that I am the only stone house in the city of Brunswick, Maryland. At the time I was constructed back in 1902, in the midst of Brunswick’s early 20th-century housing boom, stone was widely available in the area. Yet builders consistently opted for wooden frame houses instead, probably because erecting a house out of stone took a lot more time and effort.

Once you lay your eyes on me, however, you’ll understand why my first owners felt I’d be worth the wait. My exterior simply radiates rustic charm, and the playful blues and browns that color it help to create a friendly, welcoming first impression.

If you’re worried I’m only superficially attractive, there’s no need to fret—I’m lovely inside and out. My gourmet kitchen, remodeled in the 1960s, boasts modern cupboards, paneling, and ceiling tiles. But my most impressive interior feature is an open string, southern pine main staircase with turned newel posts and balusters. The floorboards that run throughout are also made of southern pine, and nearly all my woodwork is original.

My property also contains three outbuildings that further distinguish me from others in the area—a two-car garage, a vintage spring house, and a three-season gazebo with ceiling fans and an electric stove! Combined with my 1 1/2 acres of verdant grounds to enjoy, you’ll (almost) never want to head back inside.
