City Island, a small maritime community in the northeast Bronx neighborhood of New York City, is famed for its maritime history and specifically its yacht-building past. Access to the island is limited by a small bridge and has kept much of this nautical hub from inappropriate development. The City Island Nautical Museum is housed in a school building designed by C.B.J. Snyder in 1897, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places and a designated New York City landmark. In addition to displaying and maintaining the permanent collection and mounting temporary exhibitions, the volunteer staff provides tours for visiting school groups and organizations interested in City Island.
