The Oscar Anderson House is Anchorage's only house museum, and it provides visitors a glimpse of life in early Anchorage. In 1915, Oscar Anderson, a Swedish immigrant, entrepreneur, and businessman, came to Alaska to purchase land, build a home, and send for his family. By his own account, he was the 18th person to arrive at the new “Tent City," the start of what is now the largest city in Alaska. In 1976, Oscar's widow donated the house to the Municipality of Anchorage. The house was listed on the National Register for Historic Places in 1978 for its architectural significance and representation of Oscar Anderson’s role in the development of early Anchorage. After extensive restoration, the house was turned into a museum in 1982.
