Ayr Mount Historic Site

  • Constructed: 1815
  • Location: Hillsborough, NC

Ayr Mount, a Federal-style plantation house built in 1815 just outside historic Hillsborough, N.C., was built by William Kirkland. One of the first brick homes in the area and named for his birthplace in Ayr, Scotland, the house was home to Kirkland and four generations of his family for the next 170 years. In 1985 the house was purchased by Richard H. Jenrette, who meticulously restored and furnished Ayr Mount with period antiques and decorative arts, including many original Kirkland furnishings. Ayr Mount's classical architectural design, with a two-story central block and flanking single story wings on either side, became the prototype for many similar houses in North Carolina in coming years. The house is surrounded by 285 acres of picturesque protected land.
