Edward Hopper House to Receive Prestigious Award for Stewardship of Iconic Artist’s New York Home

Museum and History Center recognized for innovative youth outreach and programming

The National Trust for Historic Preservation will present the 2018 Trustees Emeritus Award for Excellence in the Stewardship of Historic Sites to the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, in Nyack, New York. The site is one of nine award winners to be honored by the National Trust during its 2018 PastForward National Preservation Conference this week in San Francisco.

The Edward Hopper House interprets the birthplace of the iconic American artist, Edward Hopper, and uses it as a lens to explores the themes and places that informed his life and his work. The Trustees Emeritus Award recognizes the site for its innovative and impactful community engagement initiatives, especially the Nighthawks Teen Leadership program, which opens trains area youth to be tour guides and general ambassadors of the museum while affording them opportunities to attend other cultural art organizations and participate in college prep activities.

“The Edward Hopper House is an exciting innovator in communicating how a sense of place is so integral to exploring an artist’s work and in engaging modern, younger audiences in that exploration,” said Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Its Nighthawks program, outreach to area K-12 students, and high school scholarship program open the world of artistic curiosity and creative expression to young people while preserving and interpreting a place so closely tied to Hopper’s life and work.”

The National Preservation Awards are bestowed on distinguished individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and corporations whose skill and determination have given new meaning to their communities through preservation of our architectural and cultural heritage. These efforts include citizen attempts to save and maintain important landmarks; companies and craftsmen whose work restores the richness of the past; the vision of public officials who support preservation projects and legislation in their communities; and educators and journalists who help Americans understand the value of preservation.
