Settlement Over New Jersey Palisades Project Will Preserve National Historic Landmark

Statement by Stephanie K. Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation

Today, a coalition of conservation groups and LG Electronics USA announced a settlement on a new design for the company’s American headquarters at the Palisades. The following is a statement from Stephanie K. Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation:

“Today’s announcement is a victory for millions of Americans who treasure the beauty of the historic Palisades cliffs, as well as for LG and the coalition which has been working tirelessly to preserve this storied site’s iconic vistas. It is heartening to know that the place where some of the country’s earliest conservation efforts took place will remain unspoiled.

“Just as past generations have marveled at this natural wonder, today’s visitors and future generations will experience the Palisades in its pristine state because of decades of preservation work, collaboration and commitment from all involved. We thank LG for its contributions to this positive outcome which will benefit not only Palisades visitors but also the residents of Englewood Cliffs who live and work in the areas surrounding these parks.”

Background on the threat to the Palisades

LG had originally proposed an eight-story north wing of approximately 143 feet and a three story south wing in their original design that would have spoiled the historic scenic views of the New Jersey cliffs along the Hudson River. The Palisades were previously included on the 2014 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places and are currently among the National Trust’s portfolio of National Treasures.
