PNGs

PNGs should be used only for readable graphics or visuals requiring fine detail.

Save PNGs at 8-bit or 16-bit. Must be at least 800px wide.

When a PNG is uploaded, the system assumes it is an infographic or similar visual asset and treats it differently. This means that it is important to upload graphics as PNGs, and photos as JPGs. Uploading the wrong content in the wrong format will create visual or performance problems.

PNG are still converted to JPGs for file size purposes. However, they are not compressed as much as other images. Large PNGs, when uploaded, aren't resized down past 800px in width. This means that on mobile, even if text is too small to see, users will be able to pinch-zoom the image to view the image at greater detail. This increases the amount of data in the images, and naturally makes them slower.
