11 Most Endangered Places 2011
The National Trust’s 24th annual list includes the now vacant and severely deteriorated Long Island, N.Y. home where John Coltrane, one of America’s most widely acclaimed jazz artists, wrote his masterpiece, A Love Supreme; Prentice Women’s Hospital, a concrete and glass cloverleaf-shaped icon that has added drama and interest to the Chicago skyline for four decades; and, Fort Gaines, a Civil War fortress located on Dauphin Island at the entrance to Mobile Bay, Ala., where destructive erosion is jeopardizing a beloved national treasure.
