The Edgell Memorial Library, one of the few remaining Victorian Gothic-style buildings in the area, anchors the Centre Common in Framingham, Massachusetts, a quintessential New England town common. As the town's first free-standing library, this memorial was built by the local community using local materials in 1872 as a monument to the valor of Civil War Soldiers and is a testament to community pride. When demolition was threatened by the construction of a new library in 1963, concerned citizens and the then-Framingham Historical Society rallied to save the beloved library. Today the Framingham History Center is working to restore this building and halt the demolition by neglect that has threatened it since.
