Reviews

Hidden from the street on 109 acres of woodlands, meadows, and trails, Stonehurst is the most intact example of architect Henry Hobson Richardson’s innovative approach to country house design and the only one that is open to the public.

The convention-breaking house crowns a spectacular rise selected by Frederick Law Olmsted, widely considered the father of American landscape architecture. This work of unified organic architecture from 1886 features flowing interiors with hand-crafted details and original furnishings that herald the Arts and Crafts movement in America.

The homeowner, social reformer Robert Treat Paine, chaired the building committee of Richardson’s Trinity Church and worked tirelessly to help the poor and to promote international peace.
