The Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, located on Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, is still an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse continues to exhibit its original first order Fresnel lens and is one of only six extent early classic brick lighthouses. Pensacola is site of the first European settlement in America, dating to 1559. The lighthouse has unique exhibits from early pre-contact indigenous populations up to early space travel and the Coast Guard's automation of the light in 1965.
The lighthouse, operated by a local non profit, recently underwent a $3.5 million restoration and is currently among the best-preserved and most intact light stations in the county. It has been featured on many national and international broadcasts and hosts over 150,000 visitors annually. The maritime museum raises awareness and acts as an advocate for preservation both in its local community and within the state of Florida.
Between March and November, the museum also has Blue Angel air shows every Tuesday and Wednesday. These shows are centered over the lighthouse tower, putting guests at eye level with the Navy’s flight demonstration team.
