Ruthmere, the 1910 Beaux Arts home of Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley, is lavishly decorated with silk wall coverings, hand-carved woodwork, and painted murals. Designed and built by Chicago-trained architect E. Hill Turnock, Ruthmere’s world-class fine art collection includes Rodin sculptures, Tiffany glass, and vintage autos. In 1969, the current owners sold Ruthmere to the Beardsley Foundation for the express purpose of its restoration under Robert Buchanan Beardsley, an architectural preservationist. One block from Ruthmere is the Havilah Beardsley House—a step back in time to Elkhart’s roots and the city founder’s entrepreneurial spirit. Completing the campus is the Creek House Center which originally served as the horse stables for the Ruthmere campus before being converted into a residence.
