As of August 2026, 160 acres of Hanging Rock Revolutionary War Battlefield have been protected through an acquisition by the American Battlefield Trust, with funding from the South Carolina Conservation Bank and a grant from the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program. The American Battlefield Trust plans to use the land to further the site's interpretation, storytelling, and programming efforts.

The battlefield spans 600 acres in total, and more than half of this land is now protected through acquisition for public access and conservation easements. Located between Camden, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina, the area surrounding the battlefield has been experiencing population growth and subsequent development pressure. As a result, the battlefield's remaining land is vulnerable to development that could fragment the site and impact visitors’ ability to understand the story of the battle. In 2026, the National Trust included Hanging Rock Revolutionary War Battlefield on its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

This acquisition brings the battlefield one step closer to being fully protected, and will help preserve the site for future generations while providing opportunities to educate visitors about its important role in the American Revolution.
