Partners in Preservation Kicks Off “Open House Weekend” at 20 Main Street Sites Across America

Sites Vying for Grants Invite the Public to Learn About Their Preservation Efforts October 20–21 and Vote Their Main Street

To celebrate Partners in Preservation: Main Streets, 20 historic sites participating in the campaign will host Open House Weekend events, October 20 – 21, 2018. Visitors are invited to learn about the campaign, which focuses on sites celebrating the nation’s diversity and the struggle for equal rights, the unique history of each of these places and their restoration efforts. The events feature family-friendly activities ranging from block parties and live music to walking tours and art exhibits.

Created in 2006 by American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Partners in Preservation is a community-based partnership to raise awareness of the importance of preserving historic places and their role in sustaining local communities. To-date, it has committed over $22 million in support of more than 200 historic sites across the country.

The program recently launched its 2018 campaign, which will award a total of $2 million in preservation grants to historic sites on America’s Main Streets. From the counters of the Greensboro sit-ins to the “Ellis Island of the South” in Miami, each of the 20 sites featured in the campaign played a role in the development of a diverse nation.

The public will determine which sites will receive funding by voting for their favorite main streets through October 26 at VoteYourMainStreet.org, the online voting website hosted by National Geographic Travel. Delta Air Lines is also a campaign sponsor.

“American Express has a long-standing commitment to preserving historic places on Main Street and the Shop Small® movement,” said Richard Brown, vice president of philanthropy, American Express. “We hope local communities support Partners in Preservation: Main Streets Open House Weekend because when we support our local historic sites and districts, we maintain diversity, drive development, preserve character, attract visitors and propel commerce.”

“Experiencing historic sites offers an opportunity to explore the diverse and complex past that comprises our American story, and Open House weekend will allow local communities to do just that,” said Germonique Ulmer, vice president of public affairs, National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The struggle for equality remains relevant today, and we are proud of this collection of sites that are a part of this program that represent civil rights, labor, immigrant and women’s history.”

More information about each Open House Weekend event is available at VoteYourMainStreet.org/Events. Guests of the sites are invited to share their love for preservation via social media using #VoteYourMainStreet.
