Quiz: How Well Do You Know the History of the White House?

Arguably the most internationally recognizable historic site in the United States, the White House is many things—a workplace, a residence, an event space, a museum, and a historic site. It is also a symbol of freedom and democracy, but its history—like that of the United States—tells a more complicated story.

It’s the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln, yet enslaved people (many of whom were skilled carpenters) played a primary role in its construction and operation during the nineteenth century. It’s the site where numerous executive orders have been signed to promote equality, yet no woman has ever stood at its helm.

These contradictions remind us that progress is not linear, but as a functioning democratic republic, it is assured. The White House, as a historic site, encourages all Americans to confront these areas of tension with curiosity.

To fuel that curiosity, the White House Historical Association (which operates the Decatur House, a National Trust Historic Site) created The People’s House: A White House Experience. At The People’s House, visitors can explore the history and functionality of the White House through immersive media and exhibits (including a full-scale replica of the Oval Office).
