Stained glass windows, intricate wood carvings, and tufted pink bar stools give Silver Bar Cocktail Lounge a feel of old-world elegance.

If you want to see the world through rose-colored glasses, just grab a drink at the Silver Bar Cocktail Lounge.

Walk across the pink floral carpet and grab a seat on a tufted pink bar stool. Or collapse into a plush pink armchair. Order yourself a signature Pink Cloud cocktail.

With its perfect blend of kitsch and elegance, Silver Bar offers some of the best seats in the house at the whimsical -- and yes, pink -- Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California.

The inn was the vision of construction magnate Alex Madonna and his wife, Phyllis, who wanted to create a hotel and restaurant along the Central Coast, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

And they wanted it to be unique.

The first 12 rooms of the inn opened on Christmas Eve, 1958. Since then, the Madonna Inn, designed in the fashion of a Swiss chalet, has expanded to 110 rooms, each with a different theme bearing names like “Captain’s Bridge,” “Fox & Hound,” “Matterhorn,” and “Jungle Rock.”

“Alex used to joke that if every room was the same, and he made a mistake, he was going to duplicate that mistake 110 times. But if they’re all different, he could never make the same mistake twice,” says Clint Pearce, the Madonnas' son-in-law and president of Madonna Enterprises. “That was his sense of humor.”

“The inn is a monument to Alex and Phyllis [Madonna] and their desire to build something totally unique. We really try to honor that.”

Clint Pearce, the Madonnas' son-in-law and president of Madonna Enterprises

The Madonnas were drawn to the opulence of the turn of the 20th century, and they brought that to their inn, adding an abundance of carved wood and gilded touches.

And even though Alex didn’t drink (“He just didn’t care for it,” Pearce says), he knew the importance of having a good hotel bar.

And so the Silver Bar Cocktail Lounge was born.

Named for a metal like the inn’s other dining venues (Alex Madonna’s Gold Rush Steak House and Copper Café), Silver Bar is decked out in pink and gold, with stained glass windows and carved wood accents, created by master carpenter Alexander Zellner. Zellner, sadly, died before he finished carving the entire bar area. As a tribute to him, the Madonnas left his work unfinished. Visit the bar today, and you’ll see part of the bar is carved, and the other part is drawn on.

So why pink?

“Alex never gave a really straight answer,” Pearce says. “But he thought it was an attractive color. It puts you in a good mood. He thought it was happy, and, well, he just liked it.”

The bar hasn’t changed much throughout the decades. It was renovated five years ago to upgrade plumbing and other mechanical systems. But it was rebuilt to look exactly as it did on its opening day, and most of its original features, like the carved wood pillars, were left untouched.

“The inn is a monument to Alex and Phyllis and their desire to build something totally unique,” Pearce says. “We really try to honor that.”

Best Yelp Review: “Do you love kitsch? Are themes your thang? Then the Madonna in a must-stop for a quick drink. … We enjoyed all the gaudy decorations as we posed for silly photos. ... It was silly and fun. I think if you don’t try to take this place too seriously, it can really be a hoot!”
